On May 4 I took a hike up Tramway Trail from Elphinstone Pioneer Cemetery and was shocked to find huge patches of dead salal stretching out into the distance along the slopes of Mount Elphinstone. On my return I started researching and sending out emails.
No one I’ve talked to has seen anything like this. And it’s not an isolated problem. It’s happening across the coast and Vancouver Island. Photos below the link are from Mt. Elphinstone.
Conditions in the forest are extremely dry, and there have been a number of recent brush fires. Please BE CAREFUL out there.
